It takes two: when do women with MBAs leave the workforce for full-time childcare?

In 2015, Harvard Business School surveyed more than 5,000 alumni to dig into gender differences in life and career outcomes. Among this elite group, labor participation for women with no children and for women with one child is approximately equal: 69% of both of these groups are still working full time. However, 21% of women with two or more children described themselves as caring for children full-time.



Some details from the study of, granted, an elite group:

  • For women who left the workforce, the average career interruption was six years

  • Of women currently out of the workforce, 68% had plans to return to work for part-time or full-time

  • Only 28% of male alumni have spouses who work full time, while 64% of female alumni have spouses who work full time

  • White women alumni were significantly more likely than women of color to leave the workforce, even when controlling for household income
